  • Work Experience: Applicants also may qualify if they have at least two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience to perform. 

Additionally, in certain circumstances applicants may have to fulfill other requirements: 

  1. Primary Applicant: If you are filing with another individual like a spouse, the individual who applies must meet the basic eligibility criteria (education or work experience) and be from a qualifying country.
  2. Spouse and Children: If selected, the primary applicant’s spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 can also receive visas. Regardless of whether they meet the specific eligibility requirements themselves. They will need to be listed on the initial application. 

How the Diversity Visa Lottery Works

To apply for the DV Lottery, applicants will need to follow the instructions below: 

  1. Visit the official website: Applications are submitted through the U.S. Department of State’s official website (dvprogram.state.gov) during the registration period. The DV Lottery opens in early October and closes in early November each year. The exact dates are announced on the U.S. Department of State’s official website.
  2. Complete the form: Applicants will need to fill out the electronic Diversity Visa Entry Form (DS-5501). In this form applicants will need to provide personal details such as name, birth date, gender, and passport information.
  3. Submit a digital photo: A photo will also need to be submitted along with the application. There are specific photo requirements provided in the instructions.
  4. Include family members: If you are married or have children, be sure to include them in your application.
  5. Keep your confirmation number: After submitting, you will receive a confirmation number. Which will be used for checking your application status.
